Thailand has long been a haven for tourism, especially backpacking. For the past decade, the islands south of mainland Thailand have been crawling with millennials desperate for new experiences and tales of adventure. However, Koh Samui in particular became less desired or appealing for the back-packing travelers with several nearby islands such as Koh Tao taking prominence. Thankfully, the outgoing popularity of Koh Samui with backpackers was replaced with a sudden interest from major developers who would utilize the most incredible locations around the island to create some of the most spectacular luxury hotels the world over.
With this in mind, if you happen to find yourself with a few days to spare on a business trip in Thailand, the luxury resorts on Koh Samui are a perfect opportunity to getaway and relax for a few days or even an extended break.
How to get to Koh Samui?
It could not be easier. Although many travelers choose to take an overnight busy ferry ride over to the island, there are many daily direct flights from Bangkok. Thai Smile Airways will often run an extremely cheap charter to Koh Samui but most likely the best option will be Bangkok Airways who fly for almost the same cost.
Samui airport is also one of the most scenic in the world, most of which is outdoors and located next to Bo Phut Beach, but you need not worry about where that is because all luxury hotels on the island will have organized an airport pick up with a personal driver.
Things to do on Koh Samui
Although much of the reason for staying at a luxury resort in Koh Samui is to relax and take a break from moving around, if you happen to be staying for longer than just a few days it might interest you to see more of the island or take an adventure.
Koh Samui offers world class scuba diving sites along its many reefs which are perfect to explore with basic snorkeling gear. There are also daily boat tours around the island and a trip to one of the busier resorts such as Lamai or Chaweng, easily accessible by taxi.
Thai cooking classes, trekking, a visit to the Big Buddha Temple or one of the many secluded beaches around the island; the option to explore is always available.
Where to stay on Koh Samui?
The big question of where to stay in Koh Samui is not the easiest to answer with that islands expansive list of incredible and luxurious luxury resorts.
Located on a hilltop overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, the infinity pool (considered a mark of higher quality) at Sandalwood Luxury Villas is the epitome of what you will find in Koh Samui luxury resorts. The Tongsai Bay is another example of an outstanding pool, yet still pales in comparison to the Four Seasons Resorts pool which is surrounded by a jungle overlooking the mystical Gulf of Siam.
However, the swimming pool is but one feature and with all considered you may prefer a more private and secluded resort such as Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort which will provide your very own private plunge pool or maybe you wish for a spa or beachfront hotel, in which case the Sala Samui Resort and Centara Villas respectively are fantastic options.
Either way, every luxury resort on Koh Samui offers something different to suit all tastes, whether you wish to be lost in the jungle, stranded on a secluded beach, sleeping on a massage table or basking in the serenity of your own private plunge pool.
What are you waiting for?
With a one hour flight separating Bangkok from Koh Samui, and you from the luxury resort of your dreams, it would be a shame to visit Thailand without taking a few days to reflect and relax in this tropical paradise. There are many more luxury hotels around the world of course, but not many can match up to the standard or setting of the luxury hotels in Koh Samui.
